Attention Motor Carriers
Legislation enacted in Maryland in 2002 requires that
every truck registered over 10,000 pounds, truck tractor and bus operated
on public roads, unless specifically exempt**, must display either a
US DOT or a Maryland issued motor carrier identification number by July
1, 2002 . If you are a motor carrier that is not required to have an
US DOT # because your vehicles do not leave Maryland and you do not handle
interstate cargo, you must obtain a Maryland identification number (MD
DOT #) and display it on your trucks, truck tractors and buses.
Motor carriers that travel outside the State of Maryland must apply for
an US DOT# from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
Applicants may apply online at their website www.fmcsa.dot.gov (listed
under Registration & Licensing).
The Motor Carrier Division ( MCD ) of the Office of
Traffic and Safety has been designated as the issuing agency for Maryland
DOT numbers. The Motor Carrier Division issues these numbers free of
charge to Maryland intrastate motor carriers.
